Hotel Four Seasons Madrid, chosen by Unesco as one of the best three hotels in Europe

The Four Seasons Hotel Madrid, located in Canalejas Center Madrid, has been selected as one of the best three hotels in Europe (parallel to Benedikt Bolza and Herzog & de Meuron) within the Prix Versailles 2021 awards. Their recognitions are considered as some of the main awards in the world of architecture and design, whose organization is run by Unesco and the International Union of Architects (UIA).

Included among the European winners of the seven big categories in which the awards are distributed (commercial centers, boutiques, restaurants, sports, passenger stations, campus, and hotels), are the international prestigious companies of Foster + Partners, Herzog & de Meuron, and Zaha Hadid Architects, to name a few. The only project (alongside the Cuartel del Mar restaurant of Chiclana, Cádiz) selected in Spain is the Four Seasons Hotel Madrid, project of Estudio Lamela. This coming December 15, under a new selection, it has the potential to receive the world title, together with 18 other hotels selected in different world regions.

The Four Seasons Hotel Madrid is one of the most significant historical renovation projects undertaken over the past decades in Europe. The Complex (built from seven historic buildings of different eras) features a luxury hotel operated by the Canadian Four Seasons chain with 200 rooms, a retail area of 15,000 m2, 22 luxury apartments, and a parking area of 400 slots.

“Innovation, creativity and social, natural and patrimonial impact”

The note published about the intent of the award asserts: “Every year, the jury’s criteria embody innovation, creativity and reflection on its social, natural and hereditary impact, as well as its ecological efficiency while transmitting values; we consider, for instance, social interaction and participation, which for the United Nations are very important.”

On his part, Carlos Lamela, president of Estudio Lamela, points out: “Our purpose when we started almost a decade ago with this project, a one-of-its-kind in Europe, was to create a sustainable building that would respect all of its rich hereditary past. A tremendously challenging piece that we’re proud to have achieved.”

This hasn’t been the only award received by the Canalejas Center. The project has also been worthy of the Award of the Best Construction by the Higher Technical School of Civil Engineers and the prestigious ASPRIMA-SIMA (Association of Real Estate Developers of Madrid) in the category of Best Non-Residential Real Estate Performance “for its great technical complexity.” It has also received the merit as the Best New Hotel awarded by the Condé Nast Traveler magazine, as well as the Best Suite granted by Gold Key Awards for Excellence in Hospitality Design. On their part, its lighting project, by the Anoche Iluminación Arquitectónica studio, has also received the “Lighting Design Award 2021” in the category of Outdoor Lighting.
