Estudio Lamela proposes an emblematic building for Grosvenor group in the heart of Madrid’s Chamberí district

Estudio Lamela will oversee the complete refurbishment of the residential building located on Calle Modesto Lafuente 26, in the neighborhood of Chamberí (Madrid). After the refurbishment, the property, developed by the British Grosvenor group, will consist of 7 floors aboveground (2,100 m2) and 3 floors underground (890 m2). A total of 12 unique family apartments will be built on this structure, to which the following will be added:

  • A common zone and playground on the attic that includes landscaping, a raised swimming pool, and a gymnasium.
  • A multipurpose space on the ground floor that includes community amenities such as a movie theater and a gastronomic space.
  • A hallway on the access floor where an elevator has been designed for cars that serve 18 parking spaces (6 per floor).

To Carlos Lamela, the president of Estudio Lamela architects, sustainability, energy efficiency, and the integration of green areas in one of the most emblematic neighborhoods of the capital were some of the most important aspects to their winning the design competition. Compared to a conventional apartment building, the amount of energy saved is approximately 45%. The reduction of annual CO2 emissions is also drastic.

The translucent façade is one of the distinguishing marks of the residential building, a design solution that brings in the green exterior landscape into the interior. This achieves an experience that integrates the environment with the property.

Estudio Lamela’s intervention to this emblematic residential building of the Grosvenor group increases the courtyard’s area to give each apartment better illumination and ventilation. Each floor consists of two separate three- to four-bedroom units. On the first floor, however, an office space is directly connected to one four-bedroom apartment.

In terms of certifications, the building will be designed to acquire the highest energy efficiency qualification possible. In addition to this, during construction, recommendations will be followed to obtain the international sustainability accreditation of BREEAM.
