Antonio Lamela’s Melilla 31 building receives the Docomomo Plaque as an “example of modern architecture”

Built between 1967 and 1971 in the La Malagueta neighborhood of Málaga, this 16-story building was one of the city’s first towers and quickly became a symbol of modernity.

Its clever 45-degree orientation gives every apartment views of the sea, while the entrance hall —featuring geometric gresite tiles, soft curves, blue Alentejo ceramics, and original furniture— is a gem that has also been preserved. This protection was made possible thanks to the initiative of local residents, the support of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Telmo, the Official College of Architects of Málaga, and Estudio Lamela’s commitment to maintaining its original spirit.

Antonio Lamela always championed a light, elegant architecture designed from the inside out. The recognition of this building is also a tribute to that forward-thinking vision.

With this addition, ten of Antonio Lamela’s works are now included in the Docomomo Ibérico catalogue.
